An AIR-venture like no other

Aviators assemble! We know you’ve seen a fair share of our great land from above, but if there’s one thing we can guarantee, it’s that you’ve never seen it like this!

Joining the 30th Variety Vic Bash, the inaugural Variety FunFlight Safari is set to be an unmissable opportunity to experience our great land! We’ll head to some of Australia’s most remote and beautiful locations, spreading joy and helping out kids in need across the country.

A fresh twist on the Variety Bash founder, Dick Smith’s “drive in the outback with a few mates”, the Variety FunFlight Safari is an AIR-venture you won’t want to miss. We’ll meet up with the Variety Bash crew throughout each day and witness all the action from the air!

And if you’re new to the Variety events scene, you’re in for a treat! We go the long way ‘round and never miss a chance to kick our heels up (even in the dusty outback). It changes a little every year, but you can expect to meet over 250 goodhearted folk, joining in on the frivolity and fanfare.

Day 1

 Wednesday 12 August 2020

  Melbourne VIC to Deniliquin NSW

We'll start at Essendon Airport, and fly to Deniliquin via Bendigo, with the option of afternoon tea at Shepparton. Deniliquin is a popular Riverina town is located an hour north of the NSW/VIC border and is home to over 7,000 people. Known for the Deni Ute Muster, the town almost triples each year when the fanfare rolls in every September. The event started back in 1999 when the town was struggling with a crippling drought and needed a new source of income. Ever since, the event has attracted Ute fanatics from across the country with almost 20,000 attendees each year. Get your photo taken with the famous ute statue, or the mosaic ute at the visitor information centre.

Day 2

 Thursday 13 August 2020

  Deniliquin NSW to Renmark SA

Deniliquin to Renmark, via Swan Hill for morning tea, and Mungo National Park. With its name derived from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘Red Mud’, Renmark is a small South Australian Town, rich in history. Renmark was the birthplace of Australia’s first ever irrigation settlement and produces award winning wine and produce. Be sure to see and taste the best of this pretty little Riverland town when we stop in!

Day 3

 Friday 14 August 2020

Renmark SA to Wilpena Pound SA

Renmark to Wilpena Pound, via Yunta for lunch. Because the Wilpena Pound airport cannot handle the number of Safari aircraft, we’ll most likely land at the outback station of Merna Mora south of Parachilna. They have two airstrips; one for landing and one for parking and we’ll arrange transport to the Wilpena Pound Resort.Wilpena Pound is a glorious natural amphitheatre nestled in the heart of the Flinders Ranges. This extraordinary part of the world is over 800 million years old, with the local Adnyamathanha people calling it home for tens of thousands of years.

Day 4

 Saturday 15 August 2020

  Wilpena SA to Marree SA

Prepare for a real taste of the outback! After a relaxing morning we drive back to Merna Mora and hop over to Parachilna for lunch. Parachilna is on the railway line and road between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek. Today, the Prairie Hotel, railway station, airstrip and a few buildings remain. Our overnight stop is on the fringe of the Simpson Desert. Marree was the home of Australia’s first ever Mosque, built from tree stumps in 1861 by Afghan camel drivers. Nowadays, you can find the “bough shed”, a reconstructed mosque to commemorate the historic building in the centre of town.

Day 5

 Sunday 16 August 2020

  Marree SA to Birdsville QLD

We are looking to get permission for 20 or 30 aircraft to fly into the lunch stop Mungerannie which will suit as some will detour to William Creek or Innaminka today instead. The evening will be spent in Birdsville - a Variety Bash favourite. Opening its arms to many a Variety Bash over the years, this iconic Aussie town thrives off tourism. Pay a visit to the heritage-listed Birdsville Hotel to experience this authentic outback pub that has won the hearts of travellers from across the world.

Day 6 - 7

 Monday 17 - Tuesday 18 August 2020

  Birdsville QLD to Longreach QLD

For fuel reasons, many will detour via Bedourie for morning tea today. The townspeople at Bedourie are very helpful and are considering our visit a treat for the town. Bedourie to Longreach is 270NM. Once you arrive, make the most of your Rest Day in Longreach and check out the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Outback Heritage Centre and the Qantas Founders Museum. Our Gold Sponsor QBE has organised the famous Redbull Air Race World Champion Matt Hall to speak about his time as an F-18 pilot in the RAAF and hopefully he will show us a thing or two about flying...

Day 8

 Wednesday 19 August 2020

  Longreach QLD to Springsure QLD

Making our way out of Red Dirt terrain, we fly to Barcaldine for morning tea and fuel at Alpha for lunch. Alpha can take up to 30 aircraft at a time so if some stay longer at the first stop, this will suit. Tonight’s stop is at picturesque Springsure and the local airport manager could not have been more helpful. They will close the cross strip for aircraft parking, organise a ground radio, cone markers and ground marshalls. Springsure is a picturesque valley home to, as the name suggests, springs - such as the local creek and surrounding gullies.

Day 9

 Thursday 20 August 2020

 Springsure QLD to Yeppoon QLD

This day is a short hop to Rockhampton airfield for those than can or want to fly into controlled airspace or Yeppoon ALA for those who can’t. This sub-tropical seaside town is a tourist hotspot with world class seafood, beef and tropical produce you can enjoy in one of the many cafes and restaurants. Take a stroll along the esplanade or make your way to Turtle Lookout at Bluff Point. As the name suggest, you can see turtles swimming beneath you with a breathtaking view of the Keppel Bay Islands!

Day 10

 Friday 21 August 2020

Yeppoon QLD to Great Keppel Island QLD

Based in Yeppoon for two nights, our final night dinner will be held on the pictureseque Great Keppel Island. You can spend the day exploring the tropical delights of this island paradise before the last hurrah begins! Tranquil, deserted and untouched - Great Keppel Island is the perfect sport for an end of event wind down. Check out the heritage-listed Leeke Homestead or take a dip and go snorkelling in the crystal-blue water at one of the island's seventeen pristine, clear-water, white-sand beaches!

What Can I Expect?

Fun days and nights

Each day we will take in the amazing scenery as we fly through the outback following the cars. Every evening we share with the Bash participants, and, listening to their stories from the last 30 years, this promises to be one big party!

Just like the Variety Bash, the Variety FunFlight Safari combines FUN with fundraising. Every participating aircraft will raise at least $5,000 in support of children touched by adversity. We will provide you with an online fundraisng page and heaps of resources and tips!

Variety supports families and children when times are tough and when there is nowhere else to turn. In 2019 Variety Victoria directly impacted the lives of 8,769 local children through the delivery of $1,762,450 in grants for tangible equipment and life changing programs. In 2020 a portion of funds raised from the Variety Funflight Safari will support Funflight to expand their offer of free joy-flights to many more kids and families in Australia. The effect of a day of fun for families that so often have little to smile about is enormous. FunFlight has given over 14,500 passengers the ‘Flight of their Life’ and we are looking forward to doing that for many more in the future!
