Car 15 - Toy Story

Magical Day for Max

Earlier this month Variety got to send a few very special kids to see Disney On Ice in a Superbox at Rod Laver Arena thanks to our friends at Melbourne & Olympic Parks. One of those kids was Max, who is nonverbal and has Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Max, like many kids his age, loves Toy Story. Wearing his Woody T-shirt and accompanied by his Mum, Bridie, for only the second time in his life - Max spoke. As Woody skated away at the end of the show, Max said "see you, bye" as he farewelled his favourite cowboy.
The first time Max spoke, was two years ago at the Variety Bikes4Kids day in Geelong. One of our Variety Vic Bash crew from Toy Story themed Variety Bash - Car 15, dressed up as Woody. Max couldn't believe his eyes. When he got home, sitting on his brand new bike that he had received on the day and full of excitement, Max said "open door". He couldn't wait to get outside and put his new bike to use.
Bridie said "this kind of excitement you offer Max is where he obviously feels most safe and happy then bingo! We have words, seriously without the events Variety has offered Max, we would not know he can actually speak - his voice box works!!! I can’t tell you what that means other than hope to us and of course so encouraging to help us be motivated with his daily therapy".
Sometimes the most special moments, are the ones we can't plan for. You'll always have a friend in Variety, Max.

I'm taking part in the Variety Bash to help kids in need

G’day! We are so excited to be taking part in this year’s Variety Bash – travelling all the way from Melbourne Victoria to Geraldton WA – the long way round!

The Variety Bash is a once in a lifetime chance to experience remote and regional parts of Australia in outrageously themed classic cars, all in support of Variety – the Children’s Charity.

Throughout the event, we’ll be visiting local towns, stopping into schools and organisations to help kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs through the provision of educational, health and mobility equipment. And the giving doesn’t stop there! Variety continue to support children, families and communities throughout the year with funds raised from the Variety Bash.

Help us give Aussie kids a fair go – donate today!
