What is the Variety 4WD Adventure?

Suited to anyone with an adventurous spirit who takes pleasure in the great outdoors, the event caters for both experienced and in-experienced 4WDers alike. The event is supported by an experienced team of staff and officials, boasting over 70 years’ experience on the Variety 4WD Adventure. Radio communications, mechanical assistance and a scout to check the tracks are all there to ensure that you are safe. But most importantly they are there to make sure you have fun! If you think you would enjoy 10 days of adventure, exploring Australia’s great outdoors with other like-minded people, then this is the trip for you!

Join us for this thrilling journey around Victoria

2019 Itinerary

The 2019 Variety 4WD Adventure will see us roam through our own backyard, taking in the sights and sounds of iconic Victoria with surf, sand and snow!

Day 1 – Thursday 2 May
Aireys Inlet to Portland
Starting in the picturesque Surf Coast town of Aireys Inlet, the beginning of the 4WD Adventure takes in Victoria’s iconic south coast. Drive via the Otways and the scenic Great Ocean Road, before arriving in Portland for the first night.

Day 2 – Friday 3 May
Portland to Naracoorte
Experience some of Australia’s best sand-dune driving that’s only allowed with special permission. Then take in the southern section of the Border Track between Victoria and South Australia, before visiting the underground wonderland that is the Princess Margaret Rose Caves.

Day 3 – Saturday 4 May
Naracoorte to Ararat
Traverse the soft sand and corrugations of the northern section of the Border Track on the way to Little Desert National Park. While travelling from west to east, keep an eye out for local wildlife and you might even spot some Aboriginal rock-holes along the way.

Day 4 – Sunday 5 May
Halls Gap Day Trip (2-night stay in Ararat)
Enjoy a two-night stopover in Ararat and an opportunity to truly explore the region. After lunch in Dunkeld, explore even more of what the Grampians has to offer, including the ever-changing Launders Track.

Day 5 – Monday 6 May
Ararat to Benalla
Tackle the steep, rocky tracks of the Pyrenees Ranges on route to Benalla. This is a great chance to try some fantastic off-road tracks that not many people get to experience.

Day 6 – Tuesday 7 May
Benalla to Bright
Pass through Ned Kelly country today, before turning east into the Alpine Shire. Make a special stop at Craig’s Hut, which is perched atop Mount Sterling and renowned for its spectacular views of the ranges. It is one of the region’s most photographed landmarks.

Day 7 – Wednesday 8 May
Bright to Dargo
Travel further into the High Country and tackle dirt tracks, ridge tops, river crossings and visit old mining towns all before arriving in Dargo for a two-night stopover.

Day 8 – Thursday 9 May
Wonnangatta Station Day Trip (2-night stay in Dargo)
Wonnangatta Station is a remote and rugged haven within the Alpine National Park. It is also the picturesque home of the unsolved Wonnangatta murders. The scenery is grand and the wildflowers are beautiful.

Day 9 – Friday 10 May
Dargo to Licola
Licola is the only privately owned town in Victoria. The town is completely self-sufficient, generating its own power, treating its own river water and disposing of its own waste.

Day 10 – Saturday 11 May
Licola to Warragul
Travel up hill and down-dale today, before an easy drive into Warragul. This evening is a final-night celebration and acknowledgement of everyone’s fundraising achievements. End the trip in style with the “Black Tie With a Twist” festivities.

On Road Support

The event is supported by an experienced team of staff and officials, boasting over 70 years’ experience on the Variety 4WD Adventure. Radio communications are between each car, so you always know what’s going on, mechanical assistance in case you have any troubles, and a scout to check the tracks to ensure you know about any unexpected conditions.  What about before the event? We can advise you on how to prepare your car! Variety also runs a number of fundraising opportunities during the year to fundraise for your car, such as corner collections and auctions at our other events.

How You Help

Variety – the Children’s Charity is a national not-for-profit organisation committed to empowering Australian children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to reach their full potential and achieve their dreams.

Variety Australia delivers over $1 million in individual and organisational equipment grants every month, filling the gaps often left by the government and other organisations.

Variety is often a family’s last resort to secure equipment vital to their child’s wellbeing. You can meet some of the kids we assist on the Variety 4WD Adventure as we deliver en-route grants to those who need it most.

I'm Up For It!

It’s easy to enter the Variety 4WD Adventure! We have lot’s of resources to help you get off the beaten track and we’re here to support you along the way! The minimum
requirement to enter is $3,660. This is made up of a $660 inc GST registration fee and donations of $3000 to help kids in need across Victoria. What makes this adventure special? You get to meet some of the children you have directy assisted as we travel through this great state!
