I'm Fundraising for Variety Bikes for Kids!
I've signed up for the Bikes for Kids Challenge to provide a disadvantaged child their very first bike through the Variety Bikes for Kids program!
I'd love you to help out if you can!
You can donate directly to Variety right here on this page.
Now in it’s 19th year the Variety Bikes for Kids program was the brainchild of Variety past Chair, Life Member and Ambassador Derryn Hinch.
Reflecting on how much his very first bike meant to him, under difficult financial circumstances for his family, Derryn campaigned to make sure all kids can enjoy the freedom of a bicycle.
In 2002 Derryn started a radiothon on 3AW that ran for 10 years, raising over $2.5M and donating over 12,000 bikes to kids in need. The program was re-launched in 2017 and has donated over 1,000 more bikes to deserving children.
With 1 in 6 Victorian children living in poverty in Victoria, simple items like bikes are out of reach for many.
The moments of joy we have all experienced when a child receives their first bike through the Variety Bikes for Kids program are magic, and this magic resonates even further than you could imagine.
Whilst providing fun, freedom, independence and inclusion with their peers – the physical, emotional and mental health benefits of owning a bike are also hugely important to kids.
Australian government health guidelines recommend kids from 5 -17 should aim for at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a day, including travelling to school and other activities. 55% of kids don't use an active means of transport to get to school and 80% don't meet the daily exercise recommendations, this increases with children living with disadvantage who may not have access to extracurricular activities. Owning a bike encourages exercise and builds healthy habits that can last a lifetime!
Mental Health and Learning
The benefits of owning a bike aren't just physical! Did you know bike riding also increases mental health and learning development particularly for children who would otherwise miss out. Fascinatingly, increased activity helps kids in the classroom by increasing concentration and focus.
Social connection and inclusion are important factors in emotional health. When a family living with disadvantage can't afford equipment like a bike, their kids can feel excluded from friends and classmates. A Variety bike brings fun and happiness to kids in need - sharing special times with friends and family and experiencing the freedom and independence bike riding can bring.
