We are taking part in the Variety Bash to help kids in need
G’day! A long time ago a man who I consider a genius put forward a plan to help lots of kids. The genius was Dick Smith. His idea was to assemble a bunch of his friends, get them to find an old car which was to be at least 20 years old. That way they would not spend a lot on a car, but instead put money into the Variety Club to help kids in need. The year was 1985. Dick named the event the "Landrover Bourke to Burketown Bash" as Landrover had stepped up to be the major sponser Throughout the next few months I will relay some never before told stories relating to my experience in not only the first Bash but also the following 1986 and 1987 events.
At the time I owned a 1963 Vauxhall Velox so I didnt even have to look for a suitable car, but did need to find a suitable team partner. Back in 1979 I had competed in the Repco Round Australia Trial and because of that, along the way, I was fortunate to meet Bill Murray who, although not related, was the legendary Jack "Gelignite" Murray's navigator when they won the 1954 Redex Round Australia in a 1948 Ford. Jack did enter the Repco event in a new Holden Commodore. This time his co driver was his son John. Peter Brock won that event but the Murrays came a very credible 29th. There were 208 entries and only 92 finished. Going back to the first Bash Jack had passed away, but son John was invited by Dick to come on the event driving the 1979 Commodore that he had driven with his Dad in the 1979 Repco event. Sadly Bill passed away a few months after the first bash.
I am really thrilled to once again be taking part in a Variety Bash – travelling all the way to Great Keppel Island, the long way round!
The Variety Bash is a once in a lifetime chance to experience remote and regional parts of Australia in outrageously themed classic cars, all in support of Variety – the Children’s Charity.
Throughout the event, we will be visiting local towns, stopping into schools and organisations to help kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs through the provision of educational, health and mobility equipment. And the giving doesn’t stop there! Variety continue to support children, families and communities throughout the year with funds raised from the Variety Bash.
